  • Charlie Sheen > Hardy, SD Live Every Week, Announcer Shuffle 0 CommentsPosted by Mike Sando on August 25, 2011 under Wrestling

    Charlie Sheen > Matt Hardy

Many people have emailed or tweeted me with the joke of Matt Hardy being wrestling's version of Charlie Sheen.

Have they both had crazy quotes? Yes.

Is there crazy video out there of them both? Yes.

When you think it can't get any crazier with the headlines, it gets crazier? Yes.

They both fell from the top of the mountain? No.

Sheen was an A-list Hollywood star in movies and sitcoms. Hardy was a mid-level talent who only ever reached A-list heights on his own singles terms when his girlfriend started banging another wrestler. Hardy gets fired, people cried out with sympathy for him getting the short end of the stick and he gets re-hired. He comes back with a big buzz, is going to have a big match with Edge and then that was it.

How ironic that the same people who once were behind Hardy feeling bad for him are now the ones laughing at him and are calling him on tweeting that he's “a washed up joke” and getting a response from Hardy himself who is bragging about how much money he has.

Stop telling us every time you get released from a company or arrested that we don't know the whole story or that the next great chapter is to come. Usually if we find out more of the story you don't look any better and the next great chapter just seems to include mug shots and incoherent quotes.

The only people who are defending you are those who have equal the problems you do or female fans who think you're so hot and free spirited.

Its a sad situation and obviously he has problems that he needs to get taken care of before its to late. He may have already lost his relevant wrestling career but its a much more serious issue if he loses his life. Clean up and try and put yourself to use still in the business as a trainer, producer or some capacity where his experience, success and even mistakes can be used to help others in the business.

    Smackdown Going Live Every Week

So UFC announces a new deal with FOX and WWE quickly responds. UFC will be airing fights on the FOX network and on FX. FX will be featured as a UFC fight night. FOX will see 4 big fight events airing each year.

It didn't take long for WWE to announce that Smackdown on 8/30 will be live on Tuesday rather than taped on Tuesday. If the numbers do well on the live edition, we may be looking at Smackdown finally being live on a weekly basis. I think many fans opinions and numbers show that live is only a positive for WWE.

    WWE Announcer Shuffle

Congratulations and bye bye to WWE announcer Todd Grisham. After giving his release, he will be joining his friend and former WWE announcer, Jonathan Coachman, at the world wide leader in sports.

Grisham is another guy who you can talk about rise and fall. Except his rise and fall is limited to WWE ranking and it seems he will likely rise back up and have a great job while keeping his sanity.

Grisham was once groomed as the next guy when Jim Ross was the voice on RAW and Cole was on Smackdown. He was the “go to guy” for many on-air roles. He was hosting online shows, doing backstage interviews or commentary on live shows. In the last year though he began to fall. I remember when he was on the 3 man announce team for the live Smackdown which was the first episode on Syfy. He didn't have hardly any energy and if you can go back and listen to the commentary, you will head Lawler and Cole seemingly making jokes about Grisham not being on the ball.

I think Todd has a great look for ESPN. Apparently loves soccer and from everything I have heard or observed in situations, he was never a wrestling guy. He isn't a guy who is going to go watch the product on his day off just cause he is a fan at heart.

I wish him well and most importantly it seems many of his WWE colleagues are doing so too. It shall be interesting to see how the announcer roles are spread around in the next 6-8 months between Josh Mathews, Scott Stanford and Jack Korpela. Stanford has the popularity on his side via Zack Ryder, Korpela has the most wrestling passion on his side and Mathews has politics/Michael Cole on his side. Sadly, I think we all know what wins in wrestling between popularity, passion and politics.

  • Ajax Drops Dutch League Championship Trophy During Victory Tour (VIDEO) 0 CommentsPosted by admin on May 16, 2011 under Soccer

AMSTERDAM — Ajax goalkeeper Maarten Stekelenburg usually has a safe pair of hands, but he managed to drop the Dutch league’s trophy from the top of a bus as the team took a triumphal ride through Amsterdam.

Amateur video taken Sunday shows the trophy fall backward off the bus, apparently after colliding with overhead tram wires. It was handed back by a fan, to the applause of onlookers.

The incident resembles one from last month when Real Madrid’s Sergio Ramos dropped Spain’s Copa del Rey trophy, which was crushed beneath the team’s bus.

  • Charlie Davies Comes Full Circle in Long Road to Recovery 0 CommentsPosted by Yahoo! Sports - NASCAR News on February 18, 2011 under Soccer

charlie daviesWASHINGTON, DC — Charlie Davies was offered a tryout by D.C. United because the club was atop Major League Soccer’s allocation priority list.

The expansion franchises in Portland (Kenny Cooper) and Vancouver (Jay DeMerit) had made their choices, and United was next in line thanks to its wooden spoon performance in 2010.

On the surface, it’s that simple. It’s in the rules.

But Davies, who credits religion for some of the strength required to overcome the horrific litany of injuries suffered in that 2009 car accident, might argue that greater forces are at play.

It was in the Washington area, of course, where the crash occurred — two nights before the national team’s World Cup qualifier against Costa Rica and about four miles from RFK Stadium, where Davies was introduced as United’s newest player on Wednesday.

  • Charlie Davies Ready to Prove Himself as Player and Person With D.C. United 0 CommentsPosted by John Walters on February 4, 2011 under Soccer

charlie daviesCharlie Davies is ready to be a grown-up. He’s ready to be a role model.

The man whose life changed forever when he skipped out on national team curfew (less than 48 hours before a World Cup qualifier) and got into an SUV with a woman who’d been drinking now wants to be the player to whom others turn for guidance.

He’s hoping to get that chance with D.C. United, which is trialing the 24-year-old striker in Florida. If Davies can demonstrate that he’s able to contribute, the MLS club will acquire him on a year-long loan from Sochaux.

Naturally, he hopes those contributions show up on the scoreboard.

Liverpool fans burned a Fernando Torres jersey on Monday night, furious that the striker their club pried from his hometown team in Madrid for tens of millions of pounds left Merseyside after three-plus seasons for Chelsea’s tens of millions of pounds.

Torres probably didn’t grow up dreaming of playing for the Reds or the Blues. His favorite team was Atl?tico, and he played at his boyhood club for a dozen years. Those ties were loosened only when Rafael Ben?tez came calling in 2007.

Liverpool fans may be angry, but Torres was never really theirs to begin with.

The final day of the European transfer window was yet another reminder that club soccer is a business first. Players are motivated largely by the trappings of the pro game — the money, the titles, endorsements and prestige. That’s not a criticism. It’s the nature of the beast.

michael bradley aston villa jozy altidoreA move to the English Premier League will bring a smile to any player’s face, even the U.S. national team’s noted stoic, Michael Bradley.

The 23-year-old’s meteoric rise through world soccer continued on Monday, the final day of the European winter transfer window, with a loan from Germany’s relegation-bound Borussia M?nchengladbach to Aston Villa.

The Birmingham club will have an option to purchase Bradley’s contract — which expires in the summer of 2012 — over the summer.

The club released photos of Bradley modeling his new No. 13 shirt at Villa Park, in which he appeared delighted, and a few quotes that confirmed his excitement over the move.

  • Unrest Forces Cancellation of February USA-Egypt Friendly 0 CommentsPosted by Kevin Schultz on under Soccer

    Filed under:

us egypt usa soccer egyptThe U.S. Soccer Federation has announced the cancellation of the national team’s Feb. 9 friendly against Egypt in Cairo, a city that has been wracked by political demonstrations and violence over the past several days.

The federation said it “explor(ed) other options” for a game that day, but no replacement venue or opponent was arranged.

“We were excited about the opportunity to play against Egypt, but due to the current situation all parties agreed it was best to cancel the match. We appreciate the efforts of the Egyptian Football Association and the U.S. State Department as we worked through this situation,” U.S. Soccer president Sunil Gulati said.

The match against the seven-time African champions was scheduled on a FIFA international match day and was going to be coach Bob Bradley’s first opportunity to call in his full team in since early October. Now he’ll have to wait until March, when the U.S. is scheduled to face Argentina (March 26 at the New Meadowlands in New Jersey) and Paraguay (March 29 at LP Field in Nashville).

U.S. defeated Egypt, 3-0, at the 1999 FIFA Confederations Cup in South Africa in a wild match that catapulted the Americans to their now legendary semifinal against Spain. Since then, the Egyptians have won a third consecutive African Nations Cup title but suffered a fifth straight failure to qualify for the World Cup.

The senior U.S. national team has not visited the Arab world since November, 1999, when it lost to Morocco, 2-1, in Marrakech (Eric Wynalda scored the goal that day).

Considering the positive public relations impact that the U.S. national team seems to have when it travels, the decision represents a significant lost opportunity for American soccer and, perhaps, the country as a whole. But canceling the Cairo friendly was the only option as the chaos in Egypt continues.

  • Americans Abroad: Maurice Edu Scores for Rangers 0 CommentsPosted by Robja on under Soccer

maurice edu us national teamThe U.S. national team’s central midfield depth chart seems to get more and more crowded by the week.

Presumed starters Jermaine Jones and Michael Bradley recently left less-than-enviable club situations for new homes in the English Premier League, with Blackburn Rovers and Aston Villa (still to be finalized), respectively.

Stuart Holden has been starring at Bolton, Sacha Kljestan has been contributing at Anderlecht, and despite playing different positions for much of their careers, Jonathan Spector and Jonathan Bornstein are getting minutes in the middle for their clubs.

Then there’s Ricardo Clark, Benny Feilhaber and Jos? Torres, who went to the World Cup, and up-and-comers like Mikkel Diskerud and Dax McCarty.

Amid it all, Maurice Edu is doing his best to avoid getting lost in the shuffle.

Making his second start for Ranters since returning from a two-month injury layoff, Edu scored the opener in Saturday’s 2-1 win over Motherwell in the Scottish League Cup semifinals.

  • Marta Returns to WPS, Signs with Expansion Club in Western New York 0 CommentsPosted by Tom Krasovic on January 26, 2011 under Soccer

She is, without question, the best women’s soccer player in the world — a five-time FIFA award winner whose stunning skill would impress even Andy Gray and Richard Keys.

Her talents have translated to Women’s Professional Soccer, where she led her clubs to first place in each of the league’s two seasons while scoring 29 goals.

But she’s also been the kiss of death. Worth a reported $500,000 per year, the Brazilian’s contract has weighed heavily on clubs struggling to survive in a sport that still hasn’t turned the corner. Marta’s first team, the Los Angeles Sol, folded one year ago after L.A. Galaxy owner Anschutz Entertainment Group pulled out and a prospective replacement failed to deliver. WPS’s marquee franchise was history.
