  • ‘The Rum Diary’ Trailer: Johnny Depp’s Latest Hunter S. Thompson Film (VIDEO) 0 CommentsPosted by Christopher Botta on August 26, 2011 under Soccer

“Now all of this may look like some crazed hallucination,” Johnny Depp, as Hunter S. Thompson stand-in Paul Kemp, says, “but it’s all true… I think.”

And so it goes in this long-awaited big screen version of “The Rum Diary,” Depp’s latest film adaptation of a Hunter S. Thompson novel. The film, which sat on the shelf for a while, has a roundabout history that, in a very minor way, resembles that of the book; the semi-fictional story about Thompson’s time in Puerto Rico as a young journalist began being written in 1958, but went unpublished until 1998.

Depp, as Kemp, plays an alcoholic journalist who starts kicking around San Juan, Puerto Rico, writing for a failing local paper and taking LSD. It was a fearful, doomsday description of what Thompson worried he may become in the early stages of his career, though, obviously, his real life success far exceeded that of his nervous projection.

  • Martyn Lawrence-Bullard Interview On Fashion And Interior Design 0 CommentsPosted by NHL FanHouse on May 26, 2011 under Soccer

Martyn Lawrence-Bullard, interior designer to the stars, approaches his job from the perspective of fashion. A lifelong clothing enthusiast, his influences range from Ballets Russes costumes to Paul Smith. With the imminent premier of his new Bravo show, “Million Dollar Decorators,” Huffpost Arts has obtained an interview with the designer. He discusses everything from his his teenage love of Westwood suits to his desire to transcend design and be a stylistic and artistic advisor for his clients.

How did your career start in interior design?
My career started out in fashion. As a typical teenager of the 80′s I dreamt of owning Versace printed silk shirts (the ultimate of what I believed chic in those days) and Vivian Westwood wool plaid suits, so much so that when by a twist of fate I ended up partnering with my sister to open up a fashion boutique, I thought my life could not be any better. I was 17. I had flailed around buying and selling decorative things at local weekend antique markets from the age of 12, a total passion of mine that my parents couldn’t understand but so amazingly encouraged. The money I made doing this was of course spent on outfits to go clubbing in. So, when the opportunity came to have a designer-wear shop I couldn’t believe my luck. In a crazy way this became my springboard into the world of interior design with my sister asking me to decorate ‘Temptation,’ our shop. I envisioned a cream muslin draped bedouin tent in the ladies’ and a paneled nautical style library look for the men’s complete with a vintage rowing boat hung from the ceiling. I loved those interiors. They were fantasy temples dedicated to fashion, interiors designed to highlight designer duds at their best. The fun I had creating them and the pride I felt when I looked at the finished products far outshone those Westwood suits that soon went out of style.

  • Aaron Baddeley Holds off Singh, Couples to Win First Tournament in Four Years 0 CommentsPosted by Greg Couch on February 20, 2011 under Golf

    Filed under:

LOS ANGELES (AP) — Aaron Baddeley returned to his old swing and a title he hadn’t seen in four years — a PGA Tour winner.

In a battle of generations Sunday at Riviera, the 29-year-old Baddeley played mistake-free over the final six holes to hold off Vijay Singh and deny a fairy-tale finish for 51-year-old Fred Couples.

Baddeley closed with a 2-under 69 for a one-shot victory over Singh, who turns 48 on Tuesday.

It was the third career PGA Tour win for Baddeley, whose game had slipped so much that he had plunged to No. 224 in the world. This isn’t enough to get back into the top 50, but at least he can book a trip to Augusta National in April for the Masters.

Singh, who only three weeks ago had fallen out of the top 100 in the world for the first time in more than 21 years, had his highest finish since he won the Deutsche Bank Championship in 2008 on his way to the FedEx Cup. Despite back-to-back bogeys on the back nine, he gave himself a chance to the end and closed with a 69.

Singh said it was the best week with the putter in his career, which would include his 2000 Masters victory. He took only 105 putts for the week, including just one three-putt in the second round.

  • Strikeforce Challengers: Pat Healy Hands Lyle Beerbohm His First Loss 0 CommentsPosted by JJ Cooper on February 19, 2011 under MMA

    Filed under:

Lyle Beerbohm is no longer undefeated, as Pat Healy gave him the first loss of his career in an entertaining fight on Friday night’s Strikeforce Challengers card.

After 15 minutes of back-and-forth action, all three judges scored it 29-28 for Healy, as did I. The victory improved Healy’s record to 26-17, while Beerbohm fell to 15-1.

“Good fight,” Healy said afterward. “If they want a rematch, any time. I think I out-worked him, out-hustled him, won the exchanges on the feet and had some real close submissions.”

  • Time for French to Kiss Roland Garros Goodbye 0 CommentsPosted by Adam Schefter on February 11, 2011 under Tennis

Rafael NadalRafael Nadal had won the French Open after a year of uncertainty about his body, his career, his family, and it all came in the same place where Francesca Schiavone had won a day earlier, and rolled around in the red clay like a little kid. I admit to feeling the emotion.

And the ghosts, too, of Roland Garros, of Bjorn Borg, Suzanne Lenglen, Rene Lacoste. So I went down to the court, pulled a Tic Tac box from my pocket, emptied it, scooped up the red clay and took some history home.

On Sunday, the French tennis federation will vote on whether to keep the French Open at the quaint spot in Paris, or possibly to move to a modern expanse in, gulp, the suburbs.

How do you feel about that, about what modernization is doing to our most cherished sports memories? Is your baseball team still in the place of your greatest childhood memories? Your football team?

Two hours after the Chicago Bears lost to Philadelphia in the playoffs a few years ago at Soldier Field, the old place was coming down to make room for a new stadium. Modern times insisted. It was a rush job.

So I went out to the stands for one last look. Sat there. Called my dad on the cell. Talked about seeing the Bears there as a kid, watching Stan Smith in a tennis tournament there. My dad said he saw auto races there.

History. Even Jack Dempsey fought Gene Tunney in the famous long count. Al Capone had bet on Dempsey.

The bulldozers were already there when my dad mentioned something about, well, never really liking the place. I noticed it smelled like urine. The seats were uncomfortable and didn’t even face the middle of the field. The bathrooms are disgusting, the food no good, the sightlines a disaster.

We started laughing and realized: The place is a dump.

    Reality weighs more than memories.

  • MMA Top 10 Pound-for-Pound: Silva Back on Top, Jones Gets a Spot 0 CommentsPosted by Yahoo! Sports - Golf News on February 8, 2011 under MMA

Now that was the Anderson Silva we’ve been wanting to see.

After four straight lackluster defenses of his middleweight title, Silva knocked out Vitor Belfort with a front kick to the chin that has to go down as one of the most incredible knockouts we’ve seen in the sport. But part of what makes Silva amazing is that it might not have even been the most incredible knockout of his career: I’m still partial to the stunning elbow he used to knock out Tony Fryklund in 2006.

When you know Silva is capable of such highlight-reel heroics, it’s easy to grow disappointed in him when he delivers sub-par performances, as he did against Patrick Cote, Thales Leites, Demian Maia and Chael Sonnen. But when Silva is on his game, he’s the best in the world, and he’s now back on top of my pound-for-pound rankings.

  • Eleven Ways of Looking at UFC 126 0 CommentsPosted by Chris Mortensen on February 3, 2011 under MMA

    Filed under:

From predictions to observations to useless information and even more useless opinions, here’s some food for thought in advance of UFC 126 from Las Vegas on Saturday night:

    I. Vitor Belfort’s mental game will be his biggest obstacle to overcome.
Throughout his career, Belfort has been spectacular when things go well early on. It’s when they start to turn against him that he crumbles. At times Belfort seems like he’s waiting to find out whether he’s going to win rather than going out and making it happen. His best chance is to catch Silva with something in the first round – maybe even the first two minutes. If he gives Silva a chance to figure out his timing and range, forget it. Of all the things Belfort does well, battling through adversity isn’t one of them.

II. Miguel Torres will punch a hole in Antonio Banuelos’ head. It will be swift, and it won’t be close.
