WASHINGTON — The head of a Washington advocacy group was arrested Tuesday on charges that he’d been on the payroll of Pakistan’s spy agency for years and hid millions of dollars used for illegal lobbying.

Syed Ghulam Nabi Fai, of Fairfax, Va., is the executive director of the Kashmiri American Council, which prosecutors said was being run in secret by the Pakistani government. Prosecutors said Pakistani government officials reviewed Fai’s budget and directed him to make campaign donations to Congress and develop sources at the White House and State Department.

A second man, Zaheer Ahmad, was also charged. Prosecutors said he recruited people to act as straw donors who would give money that really was coming from the Pakistani government. Ahmad is not under arrest and is in Pakistan, prosecutors said. Both men are U.S. citizens.

UFC 129 is still two months away, but it has already obliterated North American records for ticket sales and gate.

The promotion confirmed that Toronto’s Rogers Centre was reconfigured from 42,000 to meet extra demand, yet fans snapped up tickets in record numbers. The final tally was 55,000 seats sold.

The old record for paid attendance was just set in December 2010, when 23,152 filled Montreal’s Bell Centre.

When I was a young MMA fan in the early 2000s, the only way for me to watch Japanese MMA was to trade tapes or wait sometimes years for official tapes or DVDs to be released. Later with the advent of streaming video, I was able to finally catch my MMA live via temperamental, pirated Korean streams. I was greedy though and even with my treasured Korean video, I wanted more and so I moved to Japan. These days, thanks largely to HDNet Fights CEO Andrew Simon, MMA fans need not take such desperate measures to get their JMMA fix.

After being given a clean slate by HDNet owner Mark Cuban in 2007, Simon and the team at HDNet Fights initially attempted to create a new promotion but after two events, they instead focused solely on broadcasting.

“We experimented with our own events in Dallas, but our strength is to be the leading TV network in the field of Mixed Martial Arts. We made it a goal to have more live MMA than any network in the world,” Simon explains.

Two days after an unsettled gambling debt prompted a physical altercation between teammates O.J. Mayo and Tony Allen, Memphis Grizzlies coach Lionel Hollins has banned gambling on team flights and hotel rooms.

“We’re in a confined airplane and things get heated. I’m done with it. No more gambling,” Hollins said, according to the Memphis Commercial Appeal. “I told my guys if they read a book, that would be good. They have to entertain themselves in a different manner.”

The Grizzlies confirmed that “a brief altercation” occurred between Mayo and Allen during the team’s charter flight back to Memphis from Los Angeles following a surprising 104-85 win against the Lakers.

According to the Commercial Appeal, Mayo instigated matters by repeatedly confronting Allen about an unpaid gambling debt stemming from a recent game of “Boo-Ray,” a common card game in NBA circles. The pestering continued until Allen struck Mayo at least five times until being separated by teammates.

Even though Allen threw the first punch, Yahoo! Sports reports that the Grizzlies front office blames Mayo, who apparently suffered a swollen eye, for escalating the situation. Mayo missed Tuesday’s 110-105 win over the Oklahoma City Thunder — although as the Grizzlies tried to convince to the local media, his absence was simply the result of a conveniently-timed bout of “bronchitis.”

Mayo and Allen met with Hollins on Monday, and Allen apologized to the team. It remains to be seen how the incident affects Mayo’s already unsettled future with the team.
