Rafael Nadal officially stated Saturday that he will not be playing in Spain’s upcoming Davis Cup quarterfinals against France. The announcement came after his right knee gave him trouble during Saturday’s third-round win at Wimbledon.
“I have a little bit of a problem on the right knee,” Nadal said. “I am a little bit scared. I tried to play the clay season perfectly because the right knee was better than the left. But at the same time I know the knees are not 100 percent recovered.”
Nadal had to call trainers over on four separate occasions to be treated with arm and leg injuries on Saturday. The Spaniard cited his bothersome right knee as the major reason he pulled out of the Davis Cup quarterfinals. He will continue to play in Wimbledon and hopes to be fully healthy for the heart of the hard-court season.
“Is the Davis Cup a goal? Yes. But what I can’t do is go to the U.S. Open in bad shape.”
The Davis Cup quarterfinals will take place July 9-11, a short turnaround after Wimbledon. It will also be played on an indoor hard court in France, not the most favorable surface for Nadal’s knees.
